When to Change Your Tires: 5 Signs You Shouldn't Ignore

Your tires are the only four points of contact between your car and the road. Yet most drivers don't think about them until there's a problem — a flat, a blowout, or a close call on a wet road.

Here are 5 signs it's time to replace your tires:

1. Tread Depth Below 2/32" The legal minimum in Ontario is 1.6mm (2/32"), but safety experts recommend replacing tires at 4/32" (3.2mm), especially for winter driving. Use the penny test: insert a penny into the tread groove. If you can see the top of the Queen's crown, your tread is dangerously low.

2. Cracks or Bulges in the Sidewall UV exposure, age, and impact damage can cause the rubber to crack or develop bulges. A bulge means the internal structure is compromised — that tire can blow out at any moment. Don't drive on it.

3. Persistent Vibration Some vibration is normal, but if it gets worse over time, it often signals internal tire damage, imbalance, or alignment issues. Have it checked immediately.

4. Your Tires Are Over 6 Years Old Even if tread looks fine, rubber degrades over time. Most manufacturers recommend replacing tires every 6 years regardless of appearance. After 10 years, replacement is mandatory.

5. You Keep Losing Air Pressure If you're topping up the same tire every week, there's a slow leak — usually a nail, a cracked bead, or a failing valve stem. A repair or replacement is needed.
